One of my 2013 goals is to get more of our personal photos up in our house. I always thought it was funny how we spent so much money on our wedding photography but I have always felt too awkward to put them up. Maybe too self-indulgent or something?
I thought we'd start small (and cheap) and use some of the photos we already had printed and I just taped them up on the inside of the door to our basement. That way we can just close it if I get too self-conscious!
Sorry about the colouring. It was night time and I was trying to lighten manually.
Anyways...it's a start. I would like to change up some of the pics (our wedding was over 4 years ago!) but until I print more, this will do!
So your turn - how do you feel about personal photos being displayed in your home?

We have a bunch of personal photos in our bedroom and then a few framed photos here and there throughout the house. I love our wedding photos, but I tried to pick one or two of my favourites to have on display so our house wasn't like a shrine to ourselves haha. I love it when people have personal photos on display in their home so
I say don't be self-conscious!
I LOVE that! And I love the red chair.
I think it's really narcissistic for people to have photos of themselves or themselves and their partner up, unless it is part of a group of family shot. We do have some photos up but they're along the staircase going upstairs and I'd like to add more in the upstairs hallway. It seems like a more personal place to put them versus in the areas where guests would be.
I keep the family photos relegated to our bedrooms. Oh, except for the giant photo of Chloe in our living room. Its more of an art piece so it doesn't count ;)
I think it's great! It's your house and should reflect you and the things/people/times most important to you! I too have yet to develop wedding pictures...gotta get on that
We have a few wedding/engagement photos in our bedroom, and a few family photos scattered throughout the house. I know a lot of people say you should keep family photos to bedrooms and out of the living room, etc., but I think it's kind of a stupid 'rule'. Personally, I love seeing people's family photos on display. I think it gives a home personality and makes it feel lived in. I mean, yeah, no need to frame all your wedding photos and hang them up, but one or two is totally appropriate - especially if they're nice photos! The arrangement on the door looks great, btw.
Ha we have wedding photos all over the place! It's kind of weird I guess, but it's mostly because we got married overseas and I love the backgrounds in the shots!
We didn't have any up in Toronto, so it's something I've been working on here too... and so far so good. I have a few up in the main hall. A couple of Halle, and then one of me & Halle and one of Halle & B. In our bedroom there is a picture of B & I over the bed, along with another photo of Halle. I also have an old picture of us from the summer of '08 on my nightstand. Hoping once our engagement photos arrive I can try and put some, somewhere... even if it is just in a frame. Wedding photos I hope will find a home as well! ;)
I only have them up in our bedroom. I like looking at other people's photos when I visit, but i feel too cluttered when they are out in our house!
Love them inside your door!
I love it! I find it more personal than having a pile of random paintings or landscapes up. Although I do get the self-indulgent part! We are in the process of choosing wedding photos and others to hang on the wall and I am trying to get a nice mixture of photos of just us, as well as photos of us with our friends and family. That way we can have everyone we love adorning our walls!
I think that is nice - as others have said I do enjoy seeing personal photos at other people's homes so that sounds nice. Seriously though - I think I need a photo printer so I can actually get more up. ha.
Thanks! Ya I feel like they are pretty hidden there. We put pics of Luca in the upstairs hallway but I figure no one goes up there (plus he is our perfect little son and deserves a walk of fame :-).
Yep you have some more nice photos coming your way! Congrats again :-)
Where did you get married? Sounds so nice!
Thanks Amelia. I like seeing some photos in people's homes. Not a huge fan of massive prints etc but a bunch of regular sized ones on the mantle or on the wall is nice to check out. Or maybe I'm just nosey :-)
Get on it! I only have those because our photographers gave us a box of 4x6 prints. We haven't actually printed any of them ourselves yet either!
That is a pretty fantastic photo of Chloe though :-) I'm sure everyone loves looking at it!
Heck yah! he deserves a full montage!
I tucked some photos inside our medicine cabinet! a secret hiding spot that makes me smile!
Italy!
We have some of our engagement photos and wedding photos upstairs as, like you, I feel a little self-conscious putting them where everyone will study them. We do have a photo gallery in our dining room of more meaningful photos that are black and white though. Most of them are historical photos of our family (i.e. engagement photos of grandparents) with the odd one more recent (like us with our grandparents). Regardless of where they are I love looking at all our personal photos.
We love it and have pictures up everywhere, big and small.
To make it to the wall the picture has to bring a smile to our face when we see it and hold a memory for us. It is nice to look around at all of the happy times we've had.
Our 3 year old loves it and will often point and talk about things, it helps keep her memories of fun times fresh. Visitors love it too, we don't mind them looking at all of the great times we've had as a family.
I did a post on this a while ago: http://www.hardlyhousewives.com/2012/01/on-decorating-with-wedding-pictures.html
I totally agree that it was crazy to spend so much on professional pictures and not display them but I think you hit the nail on the head with "self indulgent". We have a few sprinkled here and there. Luckily we are expecting a baby soon which will give me an excuse to buy some new frames because please believe I will be displaying those pictures everywhere!!
As in *I* feel self indulgent, not that other people who choose to do this are!
